FAWEZI Signs a MoU with MoPSE

FAWEZI   signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Thursday 27 February 2014. The MoU signing ceremony was held at the MoPSE Head Office-Ambassador House and was officiated by the Minister of Education Honorable Lazarus Dokora.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Minister Professor Mavhima, the Acting Permanent Secretary Mr R.G Sisimayi , Principal Directors, Directors and Education Officers. FAWEZI was represented by its governing body the National Executive Committee, its volunteer members from various institutions of learning and the Secretariat.

Over the past sixteen years FAWEZI has contributed to changing the landscape of girls’ education and the lives of many girls and boys in Zimbabwe. The National Chapter has become a key strategic partner for the Ministry Primary and Secondary of Education with some of its outstanding work including:

• Contributing to the development of a Strategic Plan for the Education of Girls, Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children 2005-2010 and the implementation thereof.
• Collaborating with the Ministry and other partners in the production of the Girl Education Resource Pack that is now being used by clubs in schools for teaching life schools.
• The “TUSEME Speak Out, Taura Unzwike, Khuluma Uzwakale” Girls Empowerment Programme that equipped girls and boys with analytical and life skills enabling them to analyze the situations they encounter and making informed decisions to excel in their studies and pursue to the highest level possible.
• Their recent launch of a Programme called the Design for Change an international movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas and to put them into action to change the world, saw a team from Epworth Secondary School travelling to Ahmedabad, India to attend the Annual Be the Change Programme and Zimbabwe was the first and the only African country to take part.
• The girls award scheme to girls who excelled in Science Mathematics and Technology has been a motivating factor and demystified science subjects
• The Psychosocial Support Programmes, which have been an important safety net for many who would have otherwise dropped out of school.
• The Comprehensive Bursary Support Programme, though which deserving students have completed their education at various levels.
• The immense contribution of lobbying the government to put gender responsive policies to which the Ministry is grateful.
• Research studies: the implementation of the Policy Circular P.35 on re-re-entry of pregnant girls, review of policies and practices on how they address school based gender violence, the rapid assessment on the situation of girls education in schools in Nov 2009 and recently the baseline survey on the status of girls education.
